xvii, + 304pp., intext b/white halftone plates throughout including disposition map. Book clean and square. Spine firm, with just a hint of a reading crease. Illustrated card wrapper lightly bumped and scuffed. Inscribed "Good Wishes", signed and dated (3/8/98) by author on half-title page, else textblock unmarked. On 13 February, 1946, Australian troops disembarked at the war-devastated Japanese port city of Kure. They were the vanguard of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Japan. Playing a leading role within the BCOF, the primary task of the force was to dismantle and destroy Japan's war machinery, conduct security patrols, oversee elections, repatriate foreign nationals and returning Japanese service personnel.
