95pp. Area map endpapers, plus unpaginated 2 x 16 page colour-plate sections, with a 1 x 72 page b/white and duo-tone halftone plate section together with several intext maps. Book clean and square. Black title over lightly bumped spine. Plain green boards nominally shelfworn only. Textblock unmarked. Duo-tone, pictorially-illustrated, loose-plastic protected dustjacket bumped and edgeworn, with several short closed tears. This title is the first American edition of Fosco Maraini's original Italian publication, 'L'Isola delle Pescatrici', Leonardo da Vinci Editrice, Bari, 1960. The first British edition was published by Hamish Hamilton, 1962, under the title 'Hekura: The Diving Girls' Island'. The author (b. 1912; d. 2004) travelled to Japan to to photograph and study the amphibious communities where the Ama women dive for molluscs fifty feet down among the rocks in the sea . . . Contents include: Prelims., (20) chapters. Book weight approx. 595g.
