Existing for just 20 months of World War Two, the story of the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion is a most unusual and proud one in the annals of Australian military history. Its ranks were basically a 'scratch' unit made up mainly of 18 and 19 year olds, and was formed in October/November 1941, armed with mostly 1914-1918 weapons, and led by World War One officers. They were the first to fight the numerically superior Japanese advance on the Kokoda Track, eventually repelling the enemy. Later fighting between the 3rd and 18th December, 1942, the battalion lost 8 officers and 220 men were killed or wounded . . . Contents include: Prelims., Preface, Acks., Introduction, 12 chapters, Appendices - Nominal Roll, Honours and Awards, Casualties, Index. LEST WE FORGET - these brave 'Chocos' - the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion Militia. Book weight approx. 400g.
